  8. Mary Ellen is confused.Her father is determined to have a better life and to sell more pottery and farmed goods.

  9. Mary Ellen might still feel sad about having to leave her Grandma. I think Mary Ellen's Father feels so determined because he might be trying to make sure that Mother doesn't want to turn back and Mother might start to have a feeling that she wants to go back because so many have gone back already. Also I think Mary Ellen is sad because she lost her little heifer.
